Rezum Postoperative Instruction

Rezum Postoperative Instructions

Catheter Instructions:

A) You will go home with a urinary catheter and either a flip flow valve or a bag.

  • The flip flow valve allows you not to use a bag. You will need to flip the valve when you have the urge to urinate. During the day, we recommend draining your bladder every 2 hours or sooner if you have the urge to do so. At night, drain it only when you have the urge.
  • If you have a bag, then drain the bag only when it fills. Make sure the bag is in a place where there is no tension on the catheter; pulling on the catheter will cause discomfort.

B) Five days after your procedure your catheter will be removed.

  • A trial of void will be organised by our office. The hospital will call you the day before with an arrival time.

Medications (if you are on these before surgery)

A) Alpha blockers: Flomax (tamsulosin), Rapaflo (silodosin), Uroxatral (alfuzosin), terazosin

  • Okay to stop 30 days after surgery.

B) 5 alpha reductase inhibitors: Duodart (dutasteride), Proscar (finasteride)

  • These are likely to stop 30 days after surgery.

Blood and Burning With Urination

A)  Burning

  • Because the procedure involves the treatment of obstructing prostate tissue, there will be some irritation and inflammation. Avoid spicy, salty, and acidic food for 2 weeks.
  • Urgency may increase initially after surgery. If this is not better after 2 weeks, please notify our office.

B) Bleeding

  • Some patient’s note blood in their urine for a couple of days post-operatively, even up to the first week. This is normal, especially at the start of urination.
  • You may also notice blood in your urine 2-3 weeks after the procedure (after a period of time in which no blood is in the urine). This again, is normal as some scabs may be passing and should resolve with time.  Drink plenty of water.

Activites

  • Avoid lifting heavy objects ( 5kg in each hand) or excessive straining as this may cause bleeding in the first week after surgery
  • Avoid constipation as this may cause straining and bleeding. Laxatives are fine.
  • You may resume sexual activity 2 weeks post-operatively. If you notice bleeding, drink water and rest.

Contact our office if you experience:

  • Fever, chills, or other signs of infection
  • Foul smelling or cloudy urine
  • Burning with urination that is worsening
  • Inability to urinate
